What if we could play illegal moves?

In over the board chess, you can play an illegal moves. You will likely be penalized for that, either lose the game or more time for the opponent. This is part of the game, and you'll be happy if your opponent makes an illegal move during a tournament game.

However, in online chess, not only Lichess it is not possible to play them. The software only allows you to play legal moves.

For example, in OTB if you're under check and you don't realize it, you might move another piece but the king, this would be an illegal move and you'll be penalized. In an online game, if you're under check, you could only play a move that stops the check.

I believe this would make online chess more real and also fun!

What do you think?
I’m no developer but it would probably cause billions of problems and glitches. Good idea tho
Well, I am a developer and I don't think is that complex, but maybe @thibault disagrees with me.

When a player makes an illegal move, a warning can appear saying something like : "You just made an illegal move, the penalization is [Some penalization]", and then return to the previous move before the illegal one.

The penalizations could follow FIDE rules, I'm not sure of them though, in the tournaments of rapid chess that I played, the first illegal move was +2min to the opponent and the second illegal was that the opponent won the game.

This game mode could be a variant in itself.

Oh for sure, and I'm not trying to change that. I'm just proposing a new variant, that I believe people will enjoy even more than classical online chess. At least, for me, I'd like it more.
