openings

There is no forced way to win tic tac toe when being first.
No, it's a forced draw instead. It does not matter whether the forced outcome is a win or a draw, there is no meaningful gameplay either way.
ok. Keep on learning by heart the maximum of standard openings. Good luck !
960 is truly great and will make you a better player, especially if you review your games and the hotspots again.

but again, it does not really solve the issue of "chess openings are master-able and finite" .. eventually everything might very well be 960-able.

maybe try go?

=)
Yeah, the fixed opening position is a huge problem.

That's why all the games between the world's top players, who are the brightest minds to play the game of chess, and dedicate their lives to the study of the game, just can't be beaten.

They can't be outplayed, they can't be taken out of prep, they just remember everything and the game is dull because of it.

Ok, end of obvious sarcasm. Anyone who thinks chess is in peril because it is so "easy" to just memorize the opening is either uninformed or being hyperbolic.

Chess with the classical initial position is still FAR too vast for humans to just kill with memorization.

Sure, you can spend all your time specializing in learning some line or another, but at some point the opening play ends (sometimes very early if your opponent plays some unpopular move) and you have to pick moves on your own, and even very strong humans are (from a god-like perspective) quite bad at that.

960 has some interesting independent merit, and if people want to play 960 because they enjoy it, that's all good and well. 960 should be played because 960 is enjoyable and interesting in its own right, not because it "fixes" standard chess (because it doesn't; standard chess is just fine).

Off soap box now :)
Variant combinations is a very good idea for lichess. Imagine how fun will be atomic+960, antichess+960, or even more fun atomic+king of the hill, atomic+antichess. You can do this combinations for casual games only, to not much complicate rating system.
And i don't see if many positions 960 atomic chess will have easy win for white
