Well I did err in not looking into the author's theory (or possible pecuniary motives) about free play, thinking this was another facet of how the media/popular culture effects us- fear for children's safety, leading to over protection.
However I don't dismiss his argument. Free play is natural to people (and many critters), regardless of culture. Society is wont to enforce its beliefs on children- anything from making A's to blowing themselves up.
