Game lost when the rules say it's a draw

I'd lost a game when my opponent didn't have sufficient material to win (they only had a Knight) when I timed out. I did have sufficient material to win (a Bishop and a Pawn), which is my guess to why this bug has happened (and how to reproduce it).
I checked the rules and indeed when one times out they don't lose if the opponent didn't have sufficient materials to win.
According to the rules this is a loss, as your opponent can still checkmate you. If you only had the bare king left, this would have been a draw.
@avico81 the rule says "Except where one of Articles 5.1.1, 5.1.2, 5.2.1, 5.2.2, 5.2.3 applies, if a player does not complete the prescribed number of moves in the allotted time, the game is lost by that player. However, the game is drawn if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves."

this means they can use your pieces to get mate

This is a bit too general and not true in every case.

True, too general. I guess it doesn't work with a queen on the board, since the king can't get that close and/or the knight may be captured...
